Recently two hands-free driving technologies were put into the ring- GM’s Super Cruise and Ford’s Bluecruise, and we’re happy to announce that GM came out on top. So how do they work? Super Cruise uses multiple indicators such as a lightbar in the steering wheel, visual alert flashes on your dashboard, audible chimes/voice commands, and seat vibrations to alert the driver of a change. By using an HD GPS receiver, it makes for a confident and sophisticated system that’s able to locate itself within approximately six feet of its lane. For example, if you’re using Super Cruise going 70mph and the car in front of you is going 65mph, the system will check to see if the passing lane is open, if so, it will begin a lane change. Before merging it will flash an alert on your dashboard, vibrate the side of your seat to which you will be lane-changing to, activate your blinker, check your blind spot, and go a bit over your set speed to pass the car in front of you with enough clearance. Bluecruise is not as sophisticated as it relies on cameras and sensors alone making it less aware of where it is. During its testing it seemed to get confused near off ramps and merging lanes along with taking longer to learn the road patterns. In addition, it’s not as relaxing as Super Cruise as the steering wheel relies on a tug or some degree of torque from the driver, whereas Super Cruise has a touch capacitive steering wheel. Super Cruise is currently available on the 2022-2023 Silverado, 2023 Suburban, and 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV!
