Imagine a world in which changing a flat tire is a thing of the past. That time may be coming soon as General Motors has teamed with Michelin have teamed up to develop the Uptis Prototype (“Unique Puncture-proof Tire System”) airless tire. This exciting new technology was demonstrated on the Chevrolet Bolt EV at an event last week at GM’s Milford Proving Ground in Michigan. These tires could help make vehicles safer by eliminating the possibility of flats and blowouts and save drivers money by eliminating the wear and tear caused by over- or under-inflation and prolonging tire life. “General Motors is excited about the possibilities that Uptis presents, and we are thrilled to collaborate with Michelin on this breakthrough technology,” said Steve Kiefer, senior vice president, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, General Motors. “Uptis is an ideal fit for propelling the automotive industry into the future and a great example of how our customers benefit when we collaborate and innovate with our supplier partners.” We could see Uptis tires arrive on passenger vehicles within the next five years.
