Battery load tests are normally performed by a mechanic in a professional setting. The test requires continuous measurements of fluid activity and charge levels. Normally, a battery at rest that does not recharge itself through chemical reaction takes 24-hours to lose a complete charge in an environment set at 70 degrees. Under other conditions, such as low winter temperatures, a non-working battery will lose its charge quickly.
The load test requires a hydrometer to measure the electrolyte level in the battery and a voltmeter to check the battery charge. Each battery has a Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating which designates the level of charge used while cranking. The mechanic cranks the starter at 50% of the CCA level and measures the volts drained. The mechanic then cranks the starter at 100% of CCA to determine the difference.
